School has started and no matter what grade your kids are in they probably will be getting homework.
Some questions about a homework routine:
- Do you have one?
- Why should you have one?
- Should it be at the same time and place daily?
Do you have a homework routine? This is a question that only you can answer. You child comes home and is the rest of the night just fighting to get homework done and no structure. Well then, that probably means you don’t have a homework routine.
Why should you have a homework routine? One of the reasons is because it helps create structure in your child’s life. Believe it or not your child actually craves structure. When things are chaos it throws them off and they tend to cry, have a temper and just plain act out.
Should it be at the same time and place daily? Yes it should be. Because again it creates structure. You should create a homework place and it should not be laying on the floor in front of the TV. Preferably at a table or desk where the complete focus can be on the homework. If you keep it at the same time daily again the structure will be good for your child but they will also know exactly what to expect.
If you are working with a child with special needs it is especially important to keep the structure.
